Pittsburg State University Athletics
The Pittsburg State Gorillas compete in the NCAA Division II and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track & field. Women’s sports include basketball, cross country, softball, track & field, and volleyball. Pittsburg State has developed what it calls an Academic Enhancement Plan for all student athletes, which provides them with academic advising, study sessions, a life skills program, tutoring, and a curriculum of required courses that acclimate them to the university setting. Due in part to this program, Pittsburg State University continues to produce numerous Academic All-Americans. The University has produced more Academic All-Americans since January 2000 than any other Division II institution, and has contributed to the MIAA leading all Division II conferences in Academic All-American placement. The Gorillas football team plays its home games in “The Pitt,” a fine football stadium that is currently undergoing a $2.4 million renovation to improve its accessibility and comfort.
